Bowen Therapy is an effective and gentle technique that will relax tight muscles, bringing the body back into balance. It is an easily accessible and affordable form of therapy that treats a number of body ailments, including stiff necks and aching shoulders.Stiff necks
and sore shoulders are generally the result of “computer crouch”, or slouching over a desk and behind the steering wheel of a vehicle. This bad posture creates neck pain, a tightening of the movement of the shoulders, as well as throbbing headaches.
You can try to release some of that neck pain by moving your head around in a rolling motion, pulling your arm backwards to open up the chest, and taking short walks to help your body remain upright. However, if you are desk-bound, this self-help treatment will only bring temporary relief as your body slouches back into a position with which it has become comfortable.
Your body has now developed “upper crossed syndrome” or, in layman’s terms, a muscle imbalance. This syndrome is displayed by taut muscles in the chest area and shoulders, while muscles are weak and pulled taut in the upper back and neck.
Your posture, too, is now compromised. Your head will jut forward away from the shoulders while your upper back will become more rounded. The shoulders, too, will be rounded and pulled forward, creating an appearance of being hunched.
The forward pull of the head results in neck pain and headaches. Neck pain will more than likely extend into your upper back, resulting in constant backache, particularly in the area between your shoulder blades. Added to this discomfort is that the tightness of your shoulders will make turning your head difficult. Moving your arms freely will also become more difficult. All of these symptoms related to bad posture can ultimately result in curvature of the spine. Your lung capacity will reduce, making breathing more difficult as your abdominal area becomes increasingly restricted.
